either or...

in between sweaty runs and sunny swims and uphill through the woods bicycle rides, uncle sugar and i watched babies and invictus with our girlies three.

lillie and grae understood it all. esmé, just enough. deep down in their hearts, they felt all the love and pain and injustice and bravery and goodness in the world. we could see it.

of course, as soon as i write this all perfection and sweetness will transform into petty and bratty, yes? it's always the way. either or, i like to call it.

about a minute after i met lillie for the very first time, my mom said something like "well...here you go!"

i wondered what she meant, and she explained it sort of like this: "from now on, you'll make the wrong decision for your baby. you'll either doubt yourself as a mother or someone else will. but every so often, you'll see a sign that you're getting it right. wait for those moments."

well. this was one of those weekends when i felt like we're getting it right, uncle sugar and i.

both movies are must-sees, i think. and i'd be interested in who your favorite babies prove to be. as for the girlies three, they loved the two from mongolia and namibia, and frowned without knowing why at the couple from san francisco. isn't that odd? i thought so, too. have a sweet week, you! xoxo.

I'm so glad you were able to see one of those moments, like your mom said.

Babies was one of my all time faves. Just to see how alike we really are... even miles & miles apart. We're still just mamas & babies, doing our best to get 'it' right.

Oh, how much I love that sentiment from your mom. I'm completely writing it down to keep as a reminder! Thanks for sharing your beautiful family moment -- I have been wanting to watch the Babies movie, and now feel even more compelled!

I'm so happy you're back. I've missed you + your lovely words. I'm pretty sure your mom's a genius. Love her sentiment on motherhood/parenthood. So beautiful, so true.

i agree with the girlies three. the babies with the least made the most of what they had. i can't imagine a baby from the us lying face down in the dirt and drinking from a puddle and that baby was as healthy as any.

i finally watched 'babies' this weekend and i think the reason i most distanced myself from the san fran family was because i knew them too well. almost as though i couldn't open up my heart enough because it was too familiar? does that make any sense? (besides, the naked hot tub scene on camera seemed a bit gratuitous, yes? it didn't feel natural to me for some reason. but maybe that's just my judgmental beast coming out to play.)
